At the Feet of My Ancestors (2023) Framed
Oil on canvas 31"x25”
This painting portrays an older Black sharecropper sitting in worn work clothes, smoking a cigarette. His dirty feet, a testament to years of hard labor, ground him in the history of struggle and resilience. The image symbolizes the wisdom that comes from sitting at the feet of one's ancestors—listening, learning, and honoring the sacrifices made. Many Black men in the South, like the one depicted, raised large families with little to no resources, yet provided invaluable lessons through their strength and endurance.
At the Feet of My Ancestors is a tribute to the deep connection between generations, honoring those who came before us and the wisdom they imparted despite the challenges they faced.
